Concerts in the Summer Hall · 2023 Season

300 Years of Bach in Leipzig

End of May 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach became cantor at St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig. He stayed for the rest of his life – 27 years. It seems inexplicable to us nowadays, but he was not the first choice but only had a chance when his colleagues Georg Philipp Telemann and Christoph Graupner had declined to take up the post.

Today, Bach and Leipzig form a unity. But then, Leipzig was mainly known as a university and fair trade city in the centre of Europe. Merchants from all over Europe came here and met to trade.

Bach’s musical horizon was just as cosmopolitan, just as European. He studied and played music by contemporaries from Italy and France as well as from North and South Germany. He was inspired by them and they influenced his style which over time became distinctively his own.

The programme of concerts in the historic Summer Hall as also very divers: compositions by early Baroque Italian and German master like Fontana and Grandi, Schein, Schütz and Rosenmüller, the Flemish Hacquart or the »English Orpheus« Purcell will be performed. And Bach will be at the centre in divers formats.

300 years of Bach in Leipzig – the concerts will showcase him and his world. Welcome to the the Summer Hall!
