75 years of the Leipzig Bach Archive

Unlike many personal museums, the history of the Bach Museum Leipzig does not start from a memorial building or a place of worship, but from the Bach Archive Leipzig - a musicological institute dedicated to preserving, researching and communicating Bach's cultural heritage.

When the Bach Archive, now an internationally recognised centre for Bach research, was founded in November 1950, the catastrophe of the Second World War and the destruction of irreplaceable cultural assets was still very much in the public consciousness. The core aim of the new institute was to bring together, analyse, research and make available all the widely scattered source material on the life, work and influence of Johann Sebastian Bach in one place. In addition to the practical cultivation of Bach's music, which had already been carried out intensively by the Thomanerchor at an early stage, a central collection and research centre was now established as a scientific equivalent.

Fortunate circumstances have given the Bach Archive its home in the historical ensemble of Leipzig's St. Thomas Churchyard, which has been a centre of the musical city of Leipzig for more than 300 years. During these three quarters of a century, our research has progressed further and has brought to light numerous, previously unknown details about the life and realities of St Thomas Bach.

Since its foundation, the Bach Archive Leipzig has had the task of researching and honouring the life, work and influence of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach and his family and making it accessible to a broad public.

We are now focussing on the entire Bach family of musicians from the late 16th to the early 19th century. The Bach Museum, in whose exhibition we convey the collected knowledge in an understandable and lively way, as well as the Bach Festival, whose concerts and events bring Bach's music closer to the people and create unforgettable experiences, are indispensable for contact with our audience.

We would like to invite you to celebrate the Bach Archive's 75th birthday with us! May Bach continue to be a source of joy and inspiration in the future.
