During a stay in New York, Gustav Mahler – at a music copyist’s – chanced upon a transcription of Symphony No. 3 by Charles Ives. It aroused his curiosity and interest to such an extent that he had another copy made. His idea was to perform the symphony in Europe. But this was never to be. Neither did Mahler and Ives ever meet in person. Despite that, their compositions display striking similarities.
