Concerts in the Summer Hall · Season 2018

A musical journey through Europe

Many composers of the 16th to 18th century were well regarded not only in their home countries but throughout Europe.

Johann Sebastian Bach knew how musicians composed in France, how operas were written in Italy; his organ works follow the tradition of Dutch and North German composers. The German George Frederick Handel was known as English composer of Italian music. Georg Philipp Telemann managed to combine influences of many origins: French, Italian, even Polish musical traits can be found in his works. Johann Christian Bach, the youngest of Bach’s sons, who perfected hin musical education in Italy was also known as »London Bach«.

Regional differences between centres of music like Venice and Paris, Rome and London or Naples and Leipzig were great. Music life at courts in Vienna, Dresden or Berlin was shaped by Italian musicians and composers that had been enganged. The development of a public music scene besides courts in England meant that music from Italy and France could be heard in concerts. But despite the pre-eminence of Italian music, »national« styles of music developed in many European countries.

In this year’s concerts you will find programmes with music by virtuosos and composers like the French harpsichordist François Couperin who influenced generations of composers, his compatriot Jean-Philippe Rameau, the Dutch master Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck, the English lutenist John Dowland and well-known German composers like Heinrich Schütz, Carl Heinrich Graun, Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries.
