For his Bach Festival concert, the Hungarian pianist Sir András Schiff has chosen four outstanding keyboard cycles in which first-class music and educational impetus go hand in hand. In Köthen, Johann Sebastian Bach composed 15 two-part Inventions and 15 three-part Sinfonias which he addressed to »lovers and avid learners of the clavier«. Béla Bartók composed his voluminous collections for piano, »Gyermekeknek« (»For Children«) and »Mikrokosmos«, as part of his teaching work, and in doing so developed a musical language all of his own. Lastly, György Kurtág compiled his collection of works in several volumes, »Játékok« (»Games«) over a period of four decades as a kind of musical diary.
