Johann Rosenmüller arrived in Leipzig to study in 1640 and made a name for himself as a teacher at St. Thomas’s School, organist of St. Nicholas’s Church and university musician. In 1650 he was tipped to follow the ailing Tobias Michael as Thomaskantor. However, he was forced to flee the city in 1655, accused of paedophilia. Rosenmüller then spent some 25 years in Venice and returned to Germany to take up the post of kapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel only in 1682. His works are a congenial mix of typical German and Italian musical styles. On the 400th anniversary of his birth, Vocalconsort Leipzig and Ensemble 1684 will be presenting an evening of »pure Rosenmüller«.
