In 1529 Martin Luther published his translation of Psalm 46, »Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott« (»A Mighty Fortress is Our God«). Over the centuries, this chorale came to symbolise the Reformation and numerous composers made musical arrangements of it. Johann Sebastian Bach followed this tradition and as Thomaskantor in Leipzig wrote a festive cantata based on »Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott« (BWV 80). About one century later, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, music director of the Gewandhaus, performed his »symphony-cantata« entitled »Lobgesang« (»Hymn of Praise«), also in Leipzig. With »Nun danket alle Gott« (»Now thank we all our God«), another celebratory chorale is at the centre of this musical event.
